In the aftermath of a mysterious portal's sudden appearance on Earth, Mikado City is plagued by the invasion of malevolent beings known as Neighbors, immune to conventional weaponry. To counter this threat, the Border Defense Agency has been formed, employing unique weapons called Triggers to combat the Neighbors. Despite the passage of several years, the danger remains, and Border agents remain vigilant to protect the planet.

Among the trainees, Osamu Mikumo is confined to using his Triggers within headquarters, a restriction that seems arbitrary until a chance encounter with a transfer student, Yuuma Kuga. When a group of bullies drags Kuga into a restricted area, they are ambushed by Neighbors, and Osamu is compelled to act. To his astonishment, Kuga effortlessly dispatches the aliens, revealing a shocking truth: he is a humanoid Neighbor in disguise.
